Bank of America is 'Ahole' in 'One'

A friend of mine brought this video to my scrutinizing eye. I think this is a huge and prime example of how subtle the nuances of taking beauty and shifting it to corporate/personal gain and how we don’t even step back to blink at what we are witnesses to. This video isn't just bad, I think there is something deeper here. Are we to believe that the real song and their message are working on the same level...they are not.

As one can see in this video he has taken U2's song 'One' and changed the lyrics. Many people find this acceptable to do, (think of Weird Al). But what makes this so much of an example is with sheer gall and audacity he presumes to set forth, that his motives and principles can be superceeded and layed atop of this song. I would say that the song 'One' is about searching to come together, everyone, in a love that is beyond boundaries. To work for relationships even when we haven’t been treated the best by the ones we love but if we believe in love we can work through differences and problems. The lyrics to the real song.

One
Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same
Will it make it easier on you now
You got someone to blame
You say...

One love
One life
When it's one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
Don't care for it

Did I disappoint you
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's...

Too late
Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One...

Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head

Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt

One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers
One life
But we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other

One...life

One

This exec (if you listen closely to his lyrics) believes that the corporate growth of Bank of America is akin to the same meaning as the original message. You can see how he sings it, with passion, that he really believes that his message is good and valuable. Things like having only one credit card with Bank of America on it. This is such a high goal for the world, one that all the employees should be proud to work towards. Merging not two people in a relationship trying to be able to give love and receive it (sometimes harder) but that the merger of two huge banks into an even larger monstrosity is almost the same. I recognize that this dude probably didn't think of his new rendition of this song in the terms I am laying before you but he was meant to impress the attendees with a little entertainment.

HOW ABOUT SINGING THE REAL SONG!!!!

I mean are the employees of Bank of America so heartless and devoid of any sense of reality or relationships that they couldn't focus for 5 minutes in introspection at the seminar. I guess not. They need to be entertained by a joke of a song to help reaffirm that their life's mission through Bank of America is more palatable and even can be traced to the original meaning of the song 'One'. Wouldn’t it make the world a little better if companies wanted to embolden their employees to create more well rounded lives? You may be thinking that this is a far stretch from the truth but I would have to beg to differ. I think we are just not in tune with the subtleties of the inundation of media and corporate propaganda that we experience on a daily level. We normally just think we don't hear or think we block it out. How many times have children seen commercials on TV by the time they are 10?

How many commercials for 'fun' breakfast cereal and other products advertised directly to them that drive their parents crazy when shopping? We grow up in this environment and think it is just normal.

That is my main point, I guess.

As you can see the audience of the song enjoyed it so much as to give a standing ovation. Can that be true!!! Or are they more concerned with appearance? To not get the execs pissed? Are they whimpering humans like most of us (including me) that accept the schlock offered as acceptable. We are the ones that make this world and if we allow this kind of crap, like most of the crap we do allow and turn on and tune into, to be the recipients of standing ovations, where are we going? Maybe this is too much, what I am talking about, but think for a minute how many worthwhile and human dignity assisting things is there for us to be doing.

One last critique for their performance, they should have done it in drag.

Keep on keeping on.

Josh
